LOOSE CHANGE IN NASHVILLE
[ country-folk; co-written by Daniel Muhammad ]
Well Gran'pa used to tell me, don’t try to fix what’s broke
And I never could quite figure out if that was just his joke
To keep me from feeling sorry for the wretched life I live
Tryin' to squeeze water from a stone that’s got no more to give
Wanted to play my steel guitar on the Grand Ol’ Opry
So I hitchhiked from West LA out to Nashville, Tennessee
Guess I learned the hard way, tough to eat playin’ songs for free
But without a shirt left on my back, don’t mind so much the humidity
Found a cardboard box under a bridge not far from Music Row
And I was just settlin’ in when the sheriff said it’s time to go
Now I’m stranded here on Broadway hopin’ to someday score
Playin’ for loose change outside of the Ernest Tubb record store
Wanted to play my steel guitar on the Grand Ol’ Opry
So I hitchhiked from West LA out to Nashville, Tennessee
Guess I learned the hard way, tough to eat playin’ songs for free
But without a shirt left on my back, don’t mind so much the humidity
Well, it ain’t so bad in Nashville except for when it rains
Which is half the night most every day, least that’s how it seems
Guess if you wanna be a big star, bound to pay a big price
Sure hope I’m not asked to do this gig much more than once or twice
Wanted to play my steel guitar on the Grand Ol’ Opry
So I hitchhiked from West LA out to Nashville, Tennessee
Guess I learned the hard way, tough to eat playin’ songs for free
But without a shirt left on my back, don’t mind so much the humidity
Now I’m stranded here on Broadway still hopin’ to someday score
Playin’ for loose change outside of the Ernest Tubb record store
